How new PET technology expands preclinical imaging capabilities.

For over 20 years, preclinical PET imaging has relied on dual photon coincidence detection. While improvements in resolution and image contrast/noise ratios have since been achieved with time-of-flight (TOF) detection, this only works for clinical PET scanners. There have been no such improvements for small animal scanners. That’s why MILabs has stopped relying on dual photon coincidence detection and developed single-photon ultra-high-definition PET (U-PET) instead. The result: dramatically expanded PET capabilities as illustrated below.

Mouse Ultra-high definition PET yields the same visual acuity as Clinical PET

U-PET eliminates many of the blurring effects caused by dual photon coincidence imaging. E.g., random and scatter coincidences are being eliminated, blurring due to dual-photon non-collinearity is gone, magnified single-photon image projections further improve resolution, and contrast-noise ratios have become uniform throughout the object.
For the first time, it is now possible to reach sub-mm image resolutions for a wide variety of PET tracers – an essential capability for accurate image translation from rodents to the clinic. Read more…

Expanding preclinical PET with commonly used clinical PET tracers

Due to the large positron-range effect, several conventional tracers used in the clinic, such as ¹²⁴I, ⁸²Rb, and ⁷⁶Br, are not suitable for small animal imaging.
MILabs U-PET eliminates positron range blurring for these isotopes by detecting prompt photons emitted directly from the tracer molecules. As a result, sub-mm image resolutions can be obtained for these tracers as well.
